After attending Carnegie Mellon University's Sports Analytics Conference last year, I became intrigued by football's center back evaluation crisis. The argument centers on a fundamental problem: without reliable metrics to project center back performance, quality defenders from lower-ranked clubs struggle to secure moves to bigger teams. Instead, larger clubs prefer acquiring established center backs from other prominent sides.
While the industry finds a workaround, I am spotlighting a CB, Anel Ahmedhodžić, who I suppose has the grit to play at a UCL-competing club next season; his team, Sheffield United, has just been relegated.
§ 01Biography
Anel Ahmedhodžić is a Bosnian footballer born March 26, 1999, in Malmö, Sweden. He started at Malmö FF before joining Nottingham Forest in 2016. After limited first-team opportunities and frequent coaching changes, he returned to Malmö in 2019. He qualifies as a homegrown player in England due to his Nottingham Forest tenure.
§ 02Position
Primary: Center-Back Secondary: Can operate as Right Center-Back, Left Center-Back, or Central Center-Back in defensive three formations.
§ 03Physical Profile
Standing 195 cm tall with a slender frame, Ahmedhodžić displays acrobatic ability for his size. He excels at slide tackles and aerial challenges. His defensive mobility allows him to cover large areas effectively when defending wide positions. Over long distances, he demonstrates rapid pace and strong recovery abilities. In short bursts, his light footwork enables excellent one-versus-one jockeying. His reach—both legs and hands—extends effectively in duels, allowing him to claw balls back while maintaining balance.
§ 04Temperament
Ahmedhodžić demonstrates aggressive defensive engagement, committing early and successfully when challenging attackers. He shows propensity for carrying the ball into midfield, indicating preference for involvement in build-up play. His positioning and awareness suggest capability for making third-man offensive runs when the role permits. His appointment as captain despite more established, older options indicates strong dressing room presence and coaching confidence.
§ 05Functional Base
In Possession: He makes clean contact with the ball and delivers strongly from half-space positions. His slender build and balance allow disguised passing while maintaining neutral positioning. His ball carrying is decisive—he maintains tight control and reliably pierces opposition lines.
Technical Skills: He demonstrates comfort making tackles and interventions off either foot.
Role Profile: A powerful, dynamic center back with light feet and considerable offensive upside. He enthusiastically covers space and possesses leadership capabilities for anchoring a backline.
§ 06Target Clubs
Bournemouth and Fulham (replacing departing defenders Kelly and Tosin respectively), clubs involved in European competition, teams seeking right-side defensive dynamics enhancement, and West Ham (anticipating tactical changes) represent potential destinations. His adaptability makes him valuable for clubs competing on multiple fronts.
§ 07Attacking Transitions
Ahmedhodžić demonstrates intelligent decision-making in occupying attacking spaces and engaging offensive movements. He shows high propensity for integrating into midfield, enhancing transition fluidity.
§ 08Defensive Transitions
His pressing and tackling effectiveness stems from early commitment in defensive engagements, utilizing his agility and anticipation. He represents a superb recovery defender with substantial hip power for matching and displacing oncoming attackers, particularly impressive when contesting side-to-side situations.
§ 09Set-Pieces
Attacking: His pace, aerial agility, and guileful movement make him a strong option for attacking the ball.
Defending: He proves reliable in zonal defending but shows occasional man-to-man marking weakness, particularly regarding blindside coverage. He can occasionally misposition himself during chaotic situations.
§ 10Projections
Ahmedhodžić represents a strong fit for clubs either cultivating more expansive build-up styles or seeking on-ball dynamism in their backline. His strength on the carry and wide one-versus-one defense align well with modern tactical demands for evolving defensive approaches.
