Football is a weird sport. The ball is the single most important entity on the pitch, yet its interactions and relationship with players' boots are least discussed.
## Range: The Hallmark of Elite Goal-Scorers
The feature that truly typifies great goal-scorers is their ***range***:
- How many different ways can they **create separation for a shot**.
- How many different **areas and situations** do they manufacture shots from?
- How many different **shooting techniques** do they have in their arsenal.
Football is a low-scoring sport. Players who log significant tallies have many ideal spots, many ways of getting there, and/or many ways of deceiving the goalie.
### Creating Separation for Shots
**On Ball**: Feints, directional touches, off the dribble, with pressure behind.
**Off Ball**: Double movements, strength to hold off defenders, leap to contest aerials, straight line speed.
### Areas for Manufacturing Shots
Outside the box without pressure; cutting in off either flank; from the channel (CB-FB); inside the 6-yard box with pressure; self-made shots after beating a man.
### Diverse Shot Techniques
Low driven shot (Casemiro, Rodri); snap release with small back-lift (Salah); side foot across body off the dribble (Mbappé, De Bruyne); curled shots with power (Martial); headers.
